Nepal: on the verge of collapse

According to the 2013 Failed States Index, Nepal is ranked no. 30 and is seen as a country that is on the verge of being a "critical country" with its fragility. Nepal has for quite sometime now, been an resource-rich county. lying between China and India. The reason i believe that Nepal is on the path to a collapse is due to its history of civil war; this civil war lasted a decade long between Maoist insurgents and the government, which ended in a peace agreement in 2006 and the removal of the Monarchy altogether in 2008. yet, since the civil war ended with a total loss of 16,000 citizens this has ensued a party clash along with class and ethnic seperations instead of the goal of national Unity. The political viewpoint of Nepal is seen as corrupt, and it indeed is. the politicians and the Maoists have become corrupt with money, taking money from the country that comes from things like foreign aid, tourism etc. then when one thinks of where or how is the government or police handling this problem? they too have become more politicized and corrupt, meaning the citizens of this country arent being helped with aid or other financial problems facing this country. (this all according to the New York Times). with all this corruption within the government, this country is facing the risk of becoming a failed state in critical condition if nothing is changed.

This country has faced a divided legislature, and an enduring push for a new written constitution by its citizens. According to the New York Times; On May 27, the 601-member legislature, which had been directed to write a new constitution for what is now a democratic republic, missed its deadline for the fourth time since it was created in 2008. this shows how the legislature is lacking in support or not seeing the need for change this country needs from its corruption. the struggle to develop a new constitution is showing the country's ethnic, geographical, religious, and class divisions. these divisions are causing an uproar and protests to the government to create this constitution. yet, instead of attempting to unify the country, the constitution drafting has become a complete mess to contest to secure special privileges for ones own community.

The Politicians and political parties have been making promises they cannot fulfill. in turn, Political parties have organized paralyzing protests, with barricades and roadblocks, to demand, or oppose, separate ethnic- and caste-based states within a federal system. The protests have shut down commercial activity across a country that can ill afford such losses: with a per-capita gross domestic product of $490, Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world; unemployment is at 45 percent (NY Times). with most political institutions malfunctioning because of bribery and political connections ruling the country. individual acts attempting to go against corruption, is just a little hope this country has right now. Nepal is facing the struggle to fully restore the rule of law. in order to do this, Nepal needs to further its efforts to improve public integrity. these protests all the time are for anti-corruption. i believe until the government stops this country's corruption, the economy and its people will continue to fail, and things will continue to get worse for Nepal.
